About Us

The importance of a community Historic Preservation Commission while fostering pride in the legacy of beauty and achievement of the past can also be seen in the way an active Historic Preservation Commission can strengthen the economy of the City.  The Perry Historic Preservation Commission consists of seven persons with a majority of the members being residents of the City of Perry.  These members are appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the Perry City Council. All of the members will demonstrate a positive interest in historic preservation; possess interest or expertise in architecture, architectural history, historic preservation, city planning, building rehabilitation and conservation in general or real estate.  Perry Historic Preservation members are appointed for a period of three years.  The Historic Preservation Commission will elect a Chairperson and Secretary annually.

The Perry Historic Preservation Commission works in compliance with the Iowa State Historical Society, who provides training, requires submittal of annual reports and oversees the requirements for a structure or site to be placed on the National Historic Register.  The Historic Preservation Commission may accept unconditional gifts and donations of real and personal property, including money for the purpose of historic preservation.  The Perry Historic Preservation Commission annually works to promote and conduct educational and interpretive programs on historic properties within its jurisdiction.  One of the annual events is the Violet Hill Cemetery Walk where individuals portray deceased community members as they explain what life was like during the time that the deceased were living in the community.  Another of the Historical Commissions annual activities includes the publication of a calendar that contains pictures of the Perry Community of yesteryear.

Members of the Perry Historical Commission have also prepared three ordinances for the purpose of Safeguarding of Historic Aesthetic, and Cultural Heritage, Establishment of Certificate of Appropriateness for Structures Located in the Downtown Perry Historical/Cultural District and Property Maintenance Requirements for Property Located in the Historic/Cultural District of Downtown Perry.  These ordinances are of particular ordinance when property owners and businesses in the Historic/Cultural District of Downtown Perry are considering signage or performing exterior painting or work on a structure.  For further information on these ordinances please review the City of Perry Code of Ordinances Chapters 161,162 and 163.

The City of Perry Historic/Cultural District has placed over 50 structures on the National Historic Register.  The latest addition to the National Historic Register is St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
